Ohio’s newest state park opened over the summer.
Great Council State Park, located on U.S. Route 68 in Oldtown between Xenia and Yellow Springs, celebrates Ohio’s Native American history.
Long before the current state park was the old Tecumseh Motel, the site was called Old Chillicothe and was one of the largest-known Shawnee settlements in Ohio.
Old Chillicothe is believed to be the birthplace of Tecumseh.
Three federally-recognized Shawnee Tribes helped develop the property, according to the Ohio
The highlight of this park is a 12,000-square-foot interpretive center modeled after a historic Shawnee longhouse. It features:
- Historic Displays — Engage with hands-on displays, bridging past and present and igniting your curiosity.
- Gallery Space — Discover awe-inspiring exhibits showcasing the artistry and heritage of the region’s vibrant cultures and modern Shawnee life.
- Theater Space — Immerse yourself in a short film where modern Shawnee voices illuminate the history of Great Council from their unique perspectives.
- Living Stream — Get your hands wet and learn about how Shawnee people made use of Ohio’s waterways.
- Gift Shop — Take home a piece of history with unique keepsakes and print materials, such as historical books and aps, connecting you to the park’s enduring legacy.
The Blackfish Trail is a half-mile path featuring a restored prairie full of native plants. The adjacent Tecumseh Preserve Trail ends with a view of the Little Miami River. No pets are allowed in the preserve.
